COLORADO SPRINGS -
Dr. Fred Guerra, with Guerra Dental in Colorado Springs says there are certain challenges of caring for seniors when it comes to dental care. Bob Linden has been seeing Dr. Guerra for about 10 years, and says as he ages he has seen Dr. Guerra's approach change.
Bob says, “Things do change as much as we would like to have them stay the same as when we were 20, but they don't and so they have to be aware of that.”
Dr. Guerra says there are specific things dentists should be looking for as their patient's age. "Some seniors may need to be seen more frequently than others. Their cognitive functions may not be what they use to be, so top of mind may not be brushing and flossing right after breakfast or when they go to bed. More significantly is some seniors have lost the manual dexterity to get in (their mouth) and do the job properly."
For patients of any age, a cancer screening should also be happening in the mouth if someone is a smoker or not. When Bob started seeing Dr. Guerra this important screening was something new to him.
"One of the things I really appreciated at Guerra Dental is that Dr. Guerra is the first person who spend anytime looking for any indication of cancer in my mouth. I don't smoke or do anything else that I would normally produce cancer, but that doesn't mean I can't have cancer in the mouth. I thought it was really good to have someone willing to look at all those things that can happen, and also know the things that will happen as your get older."
Dr. Guerra also says that a hallmark of a good dental practice is to look for dental offices that stay on the forefront of the latest equipment and procedures and who knows how to make you feel at ease. It’s one of the first things Bob Linden says he noticed at Guerra Dental.
"When I come in this office I never come in with fear or trepidation or concern. Even if I know the work they are going to do could have a chance of causing me pain, I don't have that trepidation because from the greeting of the person at the desk, to all the techs, to Dr. Guerra it's one of the friendliest places I come into. In fact I like coming in here, It all works together for a place that could be a difficult place to come into."
Dr. Guerra also adds that for many seniors simply having dental insurance can be an issue, or needing more cleanings than might be covered during the year. Often times you can find a dentist that offers an affordable in-office plan to help with any financial issues and make sure you shop around until you find someone you’re happy with.
