COLORADO SPRINGS -

Anytime you may have a trip to the mall planned, chances are the food court is the most convenient place to have lunch, but It doesn't have to derail your dietary goals.

Even if you've shopped tell you dropped, and now it's food court or starving, there are ways to navigate the nutritional minefield.  Ashley Hagensick is a registered dietitian who says even when it comes to Mexican food there are good choices to be had.

“Focus on the veggies and the beans, and corn tortillas are going to be better than the full flour. When you go with a burrito usually those tortillas might pack in 400 calories just in and of themselves, and then when you start putting things in it.  As far as the meats to choose you want to choose the chicken, over the beef and pork."

Another good rule of thumb is to choose anything grilled over fried, when so no chimichanga from the Mexican food place.  At McDonald’s, calorie information is clearly displayed for each menu item so you can make informed choices.

Another small swap ditch the mayo for mustard.  Also if the portion is too big ask for a to-go box and favor the restaurants with lighter menu options.  When it comes to a smoothie remember the calorie bang doesn’t always equal the amount of food buck say’s Hagensick.

"Just have to know that in that cup of smoothie or yogurt you could have 900 calories, and that might not satisfy you as much as eating 900 calories."

When it comes to a frozen treat always choose the smaller size and choose frozen yogurt over full fat ice cream.

Remember, just a little bit of strategy can go a long way to keeping you on your dietary track, even at  the food court.
